Confronting challenges head on has paid off again
I
This publication celebrates and recognises what is best about our industry — it showcases the built environment and its contribution to the social fabric of the community — and we should all be very, very proud.
The industry is considered an essential industry and I must say the challenges and obstacles the pandemic put before us, were taken head on. The industry worked safely, collaboratively acknowledging and incorporating social distancing practices and protocols at our workplaces.
On behalf of the Master Builders New South Wales I offer my congratulations to all the entrants and winners.
n March this year, when Australia began to experience the impact of COVID-19, the number one issue for the Master Builders Association was, and continues to be, to keep the building and construction industry open, and that the industry’s status as an “essential industry” is maintained. That is what the Master Builders movement has achieved.
It is worth pointing out that the construction industry is the largest employer of full time employees. Our sector engages the greatest number of small businesses, more than any other industry and the building and construction industry trains more apprentices than any other sector. The construction industry’s contribution to the gross national product is about 9% and we employ around 1.2 million people nationally and about 380 thousand in NSW. As we rebuild in the post COVID-19 environment, we should not forget the cascading impact on the supply chain of our industry which is simply enormous; white goods, carpet, floor coverings, lighting, mechanical services, furniture and the list goes on — not to mention all the resulting employment and small business opportunities which are reliant on the building industry, and which flows into the nation’s economy.
This year our industry has yet again produced magnificent quality and exceptional levels of construction, with the judges conducting on-site inspections of the projects worth over $500 million in the Newcastle and Hunter environs.
I thank the judges, who I should add, freely donate their time and expertise to examine, evaluate, deliberate and make very difficult decisions when considering all entries received. Judges Geoffrey Douglass
Barry Grainger, A.I.C.D
Geoffrey has recently retired from a career as a Building Surveyor and Accredited Certifier, employed by the City of Newcastle. He has complemented a lengthy career in local government by participating in a range of other activities that are relevant to his profession, including being a long serving judge for these awards. He has been a long-term member of an industry advisory panel for the Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) Degree at the University of Newcastle (Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment - School of Architecture and Built Environment). He served on State committees involved in the administration of a NSW Building Surveyors’ accreditation scheme, before being appointed as a board member of the NSW Building Professionals Board, on which he served for over six years, from the inception of that board. He also served on the Building Professionals Board’s Disciplinary Committee, during and subsequent to his time as a board member.
Barry is a fully qualified, licensed builder and has spent over 45 years working in all aspects of commercial, residential and industrial construction. His qualifications include Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction Management, a Civil Engineering Certificate and Local Government Inspection Certificate. Barry has served in many important positions within the Master Builders Association ranging from president of Newcastle MBA, Chairman/Director of MBA Group Training, Committee member/Treasurer NSW MBA Hunter Division and is a Life Member of the Association. Barry was a Jury Member of the Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is currently the Executive Director of Newcastle Master Builders Association.
John Lewer
Ian Dawes
After running projects around the world and been primarily interested in restoration and defect remediation, John Lewer at 51 completed University with a first class Honours degree in construction management from UTS in the 90’s. He began work with the Department of Fair Trading, the CTTT and Department of Public Works as well as completing with distinction the University of Adelaide Certificate in Arbitration and Mediation. He lectured at UTS and UWS. Meanwhile, John became NSW Chapter President and National Chairman of the newly formed Industry and Government Liaison Committee of the Australian Institute of Building, whilst also holding down the Presidency of the NSW Building and Construction Council. John served on committee with the Australian Building Codes Board and wrote various technical publications for CSIRO; notably BTF 18, the Guide to Foundation Maintenance and Footing Performance. John also served for many years on the Australian Standards committee responsible for the set of standards for inspection of buildings. John has been nominated by various authorities as Arbitrator, Expert Determiner and Adjudicator under security of payment legislation. He is also no stranger in the courts and NSW Tribunal system, where he has regularly appeared as independent expert witness until his recent retirement. John has been judging the Newcastle MBA Commercial Building Excellence in Construction Awards since 2002, with a few years off for travel and joint replacements.
Ian is a “Hands on Builder”. He has extensive experience in numerous facets of the building industry, including commercial, joinery, restoration and the last 34 years as an independent contractor. Ian has qualifications in carpentry, building, forest industries, and small business. He is a strong advocate for supporting the next generation of tradespeople, mentoring students from Hunter Trade College, school based students and using Newcastle MBA Hunter Group Training services.This is his first year as a domestic award judge and appreciated the opportunity to be involved.

ABLIJ Robinson Residence, Bar Beach Phone: 0402 127 897 Architect/Designer: Liquid Architecture Newcastle With elements of the client’s brief that included “no leaks, no squeaks” and “build a submarine”, the challenge was clearly laid out for the builder, in terms of responding to the rigours of a site environment that would be unforgiving when exposed to weather extremes. The test of meeting such criteria was further compounded by the highly architectural design of the building. On the evidence of the finished product, it is apparent that the builder has risen to meet these challenges, thereby delivering an outcome of the highest quality.

Towards the end of his time he was challenged to work with and learn from three different employers. Apart from making a number of new contacts, he fully appreciated learning different construction methods. Fletcher’s career goals include obtaining his building licence and specialisation in bathroom renovations. His appreciation for good communication and a need to continually ask questions demonstrated a desire to improve both building and business skills. Settlers Inn, Port Macquarie Phone: 02 6581 1643 Architect/Designer: CollinswCollins The Settlers’ Inn is a fine example of a sympathetic modernisation of a watering hole that has been loved by the locals for many years. The builder has turned this old hotel into a community amenity that resonates with today’s choosy patrons. It was necessary to complete the whole project - in the existing bar, in the courtyard with its state of the art opening awning system, in the previously non-compliant gaming room and the exterior upgrade - all while keeping the facilities operational. The judges were impressed by the quality of the finishing trades.

The external building consisted of brick and exotec panelling that was painted in vibrant colours to match what the building was designed for. Polished concrete with seven different colours of glass were scattered through the polished concrete floor and epoxy sealed for visual appeal and easy cleaning. Lianda are to be commended for the high level of finishes throughout and the management of numerous site difficulties and technical requirements.

PLUIM COMMERCIAL CONTRACTORS Denman Memorial Hall – Heritage Renovation after fire, Denman Phone: 02 4324 7588 Architect/Designer: Stephen Moore Architect Pluim were given the task of restoring and extending a historic building sited among a street of heritage properties. To make the job more difficult, the walls to the extension are are compressed straw bales, a little-used medium. The whole town were watching and getting involved, perhaps a mixed blessing. The result, however, is a beautifully restored landmark with an addition in the rear that looks as though it was always there. The judges were delighted by the skill set that accomplished this local icon.

This has been specially designed for the elderly and injured clientele. The concrete pool and ballast tank were hand formed onsite in situ. Although the budget was tight, Lianda Constructions offered cost saving solutions, and were able to complete the project to the satisfaction of their client. The attention to construction detail and level of finishes makes this a worthy winner.

The project consisted of the demolition of an existing car park structure, ancillary buildings and a significant portion of the existing commercial building. The new residential apartment building contains 116 apartments over 8 levels, a rooftop terrace, as well as 3 basement levels for carparking. As this was a major design and construct project within a live and active city precinct, there were many key challenges to be overcome. Richard Crookes Constructions are to be commended for the level of finishes achieved throughout, and the management of construction difficulties.

NORTH CONSTRUCTION & BUILDING Museum Precinct Public Domain Development, Newcastle Phone: 02 4323 2633 Architect/Designer: EJE Architecture/Terras Landscape Architects The Museum Precinct, including the redevelopment of Civic station, was identified as a key future public open space in the revitalization programme for the heavy rail corridor in the Newcastle CBD. This open space expands the existing Museum lawn area to incorporate the station area, former rail corridor and station forecourt area. The site comprised a very large and detailed demolition scope of works involving the removal of railway platforms, buildings, station canopies and a large pedestrian bridge across the rail lines. North’s project Team had to overcome many site challenges, including asbestos removal in a historic building and working with existing live services, throughout the old railway site. The skills, experience and dedication from North’s project team and contractors resulted in the project being completed to a high standard, on time and on budget with minimum disruption to the general public.
